Community Engagement

Seniors for Seniors

The Seniors for Seniors program is aimed at placing senior cats in need of a home with senior citizens looking to share their life with a feline companion.

MARL continues to provide and pay for medical needs including routine exams and vaccinations and a volunteer is assigned as a “mentor” to check in regularly, provide support, clip nails if needed and to help transport the cat to and from any necessary appointments.

IMPACT: Approximately ten senior cats per year benefit from the Seniors for Seniors Program.

Reading to Rescues

Reading to Rescues is a one-hour program where participants read to dog and cat residents awaiting adoption. Research shows reading can have a calming effect on animals and can build confidence in young readers as well.

Our dogs and cats benefit from the soothing company provided by the Reading to Rescues Program and it’s a positive way for MARL to connect with members of the community.

IMPACT: Animals benefited from over 100 reading hours in June and July of 2021.

Kitten To-Go Kits

MARL’s Kitten To-Go Kits are provided to local citizens who have found abandoned newborn and infant kittens.

These kits include basic supplies (kitten milk replacement, syringes for feeding, bottles, etc.), helpful information about kitten care and contact information in case of an emergency. This program provides a life-saving solution for vulnerable kittens if a shelter or rescue option is not available.

IMPACT: Ten litters of kittens have benefited from this program since its inception in May of 2021.
